Black Mountain - Howard W. Boyd, 78, of Highland Farms Retirement Community, Black Mountain, NC, formerly of Brevard, NC, passed away on Thursday, March 20, 2014. Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, April 7, 1935, Howard received a B.A. in Botany, College of Wooster (Ohio), and a Ph.D in Plant Pathology, Ohio State University.
After marrying Betty Gwynn in 1957, he served as a U.S. Navy pilot for five years. While pursuing his doctorate, Howie and family lived in Brazil for two years. In 1968, Betty and Howie became owners/directors of Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard, NC, for 30 years. Additionally, he was an associate professor of biology at Brevard College. Following retirement, Howie and Betty participated in mission service in Mexico and Guatemala through the Presbyterian Church. Other volunteer work included Transylvania Christian Ministries, Kids in Camp, Rise and Shine Freedom School, Brevard Housing Authority Board, and helped to found WHIT-C which became El Centro. While at Highland Farms, he was chair of Garden/Greenhouse Committee and was a member of Warren Wilson Presbyterian Church. In all of Howie's professional and volunteer endeavors, he was passionate about equality of opportunity and building community of racial justice and reconciliation.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Gwynn Boyd; daughters, Eve Boyd of Philadelphia, Mary Boyd-Brown (Dave) of Columbus, OH, and Ginger Van Valkenburgh (Mark) of Winter Park, FL; five grandchildren; brother, Alan Boyd (Sue); and sisters, Judy Charpentier (Art) and Barbara Wagner.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 23, 3 PM at Highland Farms, 200 Tabernacle Road, Black Mountain, NC. In addition, there will be a memorial service at Gwynn Valley Camp in Brevard, NC on August 16, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Gwynn Valley Campership Fund, Rise and Shine Freedom School (290 Oakdale Street, Brevard, NC 28712), or Kids in Camp (contact Gwynn Valley Camp).
