Black Mountain - James T. "Jake" Gilliam, age 76, of Black Mountain made a peaceful journey Saturday, March 30, 2013 from the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville to be with his Savior Jesus. He was blessed to have loving family with him at passing. He will be welcomed home by his parents, William Howard Gilliam and Viola R. Davis Gilliam, and a brother William (Cotton) Logan Gilliam who preceded him in death. Jake was born in McDowell County on August 3, 1936.  A man of few words who loved to grow raspberries and blueberries, Jake worked for United and Capitol Airlines for over 40 years and was a graduate of the 1956 class of Owen High School.  He was a member of Garden Creek Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the late 50's to early 60's. 

Mr. Gilliam is survived by six siblings, Betty S. Gilliam- O'Keefe of Alexandria, VA, Patricia A. Waycaster (George) of Old Fort, Aaron M. "Boe" Gilliam of Black Mountain, Kathleen G. Ragan (Eddie) of Old Fort, David L. Gilliam of Asheville and Gary M. "Mickey" Gilliam (Helen) of Old Fort.  Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Pallbearers serving are nephews: Tony Glen Gilliam, Aaron Monroe Gilliam Jr., Leevon McKinney Jr., Eric David Gilliam, Brandon Michael Gilliam & Robert Lee Gilliam. Honorary Pallbearers are: Jeffery Gilliam, nephew, and brothers Aaron (Boe), David and Mickey.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Cherry Springs Baptist Church with Revs. Marty Conner and James Kisselburg officiating.  Interment will follow in Old Cherry Springs Cemetery with military honors provided by the U.S. Army.  The family will receive friends Monday, April 1, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Old Fort Chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home.

 In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to , Western Carolina Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to caregivers, Billie Wheeler, Vesta Adkins, Kendra Logan, Amanda Harwood and others who blessed Jake and the family with their loving care.
