Mills River - John Edgar Nelson, 94, of North Mills River, died on Monday, August 5, 2013 at the Elizabeth House. A native and life long resident of Henderson County he was born on July 5, 1919 to the late, Clarence Edgar Nelson and Nora Hamilton Nelson. He is also preceded in death by his four sisters, Lillian Nelson, Charlotte Harris, Ruth Bartoo and Ella Miller.

He was a graduate of Flat Rock High School, and a life long member of Mud Creek Baptist Church but he was recently attending Emanuel Baptist Church in Mills River.

A member of our "Greatest Generation" he proudly served his country for seven years in the United States Navy during World War II. He wrote a book "A GOBs View of World War II" about his life and adventures in the Navy. He was heavily involved with the Mills River Life Enrichment Center and a member of the Hedrick-Rhodes VFW Post #5206.

He enjoyed hiking and exploring the mountains of Western North Carolina and he loved his hound dogs.

He is survived by his three sons, Jack Nelson, Garry Nelson, Larry Nelson; his daughter, Charlotte Nelson; his step-son, Jeep Nelson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Sally Martin, John Wooten, Michael Harris, Kitty Klepper, Paula Brown, Joy Morrison, Jean Mullis and his special friend, Sarah Moore.

A graveside service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, August 11, 2013 at Oakdale City Cemetery with Reverend Greg Bell officiating. The family will receive friends at a family reunion and celebration of John's life beginning at 12 PM on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at the North Mills River Camp Ground.
