Joseph Patton Hemphill
Black Mountain - Joseph "Joe" Patton Hemphill, 98, a lifelong resident of Black Mountain NC, passed away Friday, June 27, at the North Carolina State Veterans Home in Black Mountain.
Born May 9, 1916 in Asheville, NC, Joe was the son of the late Joseph Hemphill and Maude Milton of Black Mountain. He was preceded in death by his late wife, Edith Collins Hemphill, in 2000.
Joe is survived by his daughter, JoAnne Hemphill of Mesa, Arizona, and his son,Terry Hemphill, of San Francisco, California. Joe is also survived by his half-brother, Jack Milton, of Black Mountain, NC, sister-in-law Lois Milton, of Black Mountain, NC, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.
Joe was a WWII veteran and served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. He retired from the VA Hospital in Oteen, NC, and was an active member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church in Black Mountain.
A memorial service will be held Monday, July 7 at 12:00 PM at the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC with Rev. Cindy Arnold officiating.
