Asheville - Oliver Roane Cross, 98, died March 26, at CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville. Mr. Cross was born in Grenada, MS in 1914 the second child of Lila and Ulpian Cross. Soon his family moved to Memphis, TN where they lived prior to moving to Marion, NC when he was age 16. Mr. Cross graduated from Presbyterian Junior College (now St. Andrews University) in 1934 and UNC-Chapel Hill in 1936. After working in Charlotte at Union National Bank for a couple of years, Mr. Cross enrolled at the University of Missouri where he obtained a degree in Journalism in 1939. The following year, he joined Cross Cotton Mills in Marion until enlisting in the US Army in 1942 where he served as a Captain in the Sea Coast Artillery. While serving at Fort Crockett in Galveston, TX he met Eugenia Sealy, whom he married in 1945. Following the war, the couple returned to Marion where they raised four children and Mr. Cross rejoined Cross Cotton Mills serving in sales and as Treasurer.

Mr. Cross was quite active in his community serving multiple terms on the Marion City Council, the Boards of the McDowell County Public Library, the Marion General Hospital and the McDowell Savings & Loan Association. He also served as Senior Warden & Treasurer of St. John's Episcopal Church. In 1967, Mr. Cross was selected as the McDowell County Man of the Year. He particularly enjoyed his many years of service with the Cross Mill Boy Scout troop and the Piedmont Council of the Boy Scouts for which he was awarded the Silver Beaver.

Mr. Cross was an avid golfer and enjoyed his golfing friendships at the Marion Lake Club and Biltmore Forest Country Club. However, he especially savored his time with family at Lake Tahoma where he served many times on the Board of Directors. For the last 20 years, he and his wife have been residents at Givens Estates in Asheville, NC.

In addition to his wife, Eugenia ("Jeannie") Cross, Mr. Cross is survived by four children: Roane Cross and his wife, Ann, of Winston-Salem; The Rev. Sealy Cross also of Winston-Salem; Lane Cross and his wife, Charlene, of Hendersonville; and Sim Cross of Asheville; six grandchildren: Eleanor Cross of Charlotte, Oliver Cross and his wife, Mary Ann of Charlotte; Taylor Cross and his wife, Anna of Sanford; Evans Cross of Wilmington, Sealy M. Cross & Campbell Cross both of Asheville; and three great-grandchildren: Magnolia, Dottie and Cannon. Mr. Cross was preceded in death by his sister, Lila Cross Mulder.

A family service for Mr. Cross will be conducted on Saturday, March 30 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Marion, NC.
