Asheville - Ralph Emery Anderson, 87, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, March 16. Ralph was born May 18, 1926, in Taylor, WI, to the late Andrew and Grace Austin Anderson. He enlisted in the Army in 1942. After his discharge in 1946, he attended Illinois State Teachers College for a time before reenlisting in the Air Force in 1950. While stationed in Washington, DC, he met Margaret Freeman of Bat Cave, NC, whom he married in 1953. Ralph was discharged from the Armed Forces in 1954. He then returned to school and obtained his teaching degree in 1955. The family lived in Wyoming, Florida, North Carolina, and Illinois before moving to Asheville in1986.
Ralph was employed at various times as a steel mill worker, policeman, deputy sheriff, bailiff, and primary and secondary school teacher and High School Coach.
Ralph is survived by his wife of 60 years; four children, Shelby Anderson of Austin, TX, Mary Strom, Matthew Anderson, and Paul Anderson; and four grandchildren, Melissa Strom, Andrew Strom, Jacob Anderson, and William Anderson, all of Greenville, SC. He was predeceased by four brothers, Emery, Norman, Lawrence, and Harold; two sisters, Genevieve and Alice; his son, Mark and his grandson, Isaiah.
Ralph was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Libertyville, IL, and enjoyed operating his ham radio, fishing, riding his motorcycle, and playing with his grandchildren. He was skilled at home and auto repair. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Mission Belles Education Endowment - www.missionfoundation.org.
