RAYMOND E. HALE

ASHEVILLE - Raymond E. Hale, of Asheville, NC, died peacefully on April 11. He was born March 15, 1922 in Cincinnati. As a boy, Ray loved golf, DeMolay, and his sweetheart, Jeanette Worley. His service to DeMolay as Master Councilor of the Cincinnati Chapter earned him the DeMolay Legion of Honor Degree. After graduating from Withrow HS, Ray began working for Jones & Laughlin Steel while studying nights at UC. WW II interrupted his plans, and he enlisted in the Army. After completing desert warfare training, Ray deployed to the South Pacific jungles where he saw combat in New Guinea and Luzon. He was honorably discharged as Division Sergeant Major. Upon his return, Ray and Jeanette married and moved to Louisville, where he went back to work for J&L in sales. While there, Jeanette gave birth to their two children, Douglas and Pamela. After 27 years, Ray retired as the General Manager of J&L's largest service center. He continued working as a salesman with his brother-in-law until retiring completely to travel with Jeanette and continue volunteering with Meals on Wheels. Ray was an active member of the Rotary Club and a longtime member of Northminster Presbyterian Church, serving as a Deacon, an Elder, and Clerk of the Session. Indiana's governor awarded Ray the Sagamore of the Wabash for distinguished service to the state. After 59 happy years of marriage, Jeanette preceded Ray in death in 2005. Ray is survived by his sister, Gwendolyn Hale Gross of Dallas, TX; his loving children, Douglas Hale (Mary) of McLean, VA and Pamela Winkler (Bill) of Asheville, NC; his four beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Emily, Matthew, Nicholas; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family suggests that gifts in Ray's memory go to Indianapolis Meals on Wheels or the .
