Asheville - Mrs. Sadie Cunningham passed away on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at home after a long bout of Dementia. She passed away peacefully at home under the care of her husband and daughter. She was born on August 19, 1925 and grew up as Sadie Davis on Blanton Street and attended Stevens Lee High School.

She graduated from A & T State University in 1948 and began a teaching career that spanned 35 years. She married Wardell Cunningham in 1958 and they have two daughters, Carmen and Carol. She taught at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg, SC for 6 years. She taught in the Asheville City School system for 30 years. She was a lifelong member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

She was proud to have taken ballet lessons under the direction of Beale Fletcher of Fletcher's School of Dance, and from that she taught ballet at the YWCA. She was also a major part of the many Jabberwocky programs put on by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. She was also a member of the Reynolds-Miller Chorale. She was a great elementary school teacher at Lucy Herring where kids learned how to wrap the Maypole and at Claxton Elementary they learned to perform to Broadway musicals. Many of her former students have always come by to visit with her over the years and expressed their sincere gratitude for being the most caring, loving and compassionate teacher they have ever had. Whenever there was a child in need of anything from food to clothing to money, she would go out of her way to supply whatever they needed to make it through the day, week or month. In later years, the students she taught had children that came through the school system and she taught some of their children.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Watts and Ruth Finley Davis and two brothers John E. Davis and Furman E. Davis.

She is survived by her husband of 56 wonderful years, Wardell Cunningham; daughter Carmen V. Chapman and her husband Peter Chapman of Marietta, GA; daughter Carol Smith-Hill of the home; 6 grandchildren, Marcus Hill(Danielle Pittman) of Asheville, Brandon Chapman of Marietta, GA, Celia Smith of Columbia, SC, Jordan and Briana Chapman of Marietta, GA, Danielle Hill of the home; 2 step-grandchildren, Kandice Hill(Demetrius Rosa) of Lansdale, PA, Charles Ray Hill of Asheville; a sister, Doris Smith of Gaffney, SC; a brother , Watsie Davis of Detroit, Michigan and a host of nieces and nephew, 3 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great grandchild.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 7 pm to 8 pm at Hart Funeral Service. Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 in the chapel of Hart Funeral Service. Burial will be at Lewis Memorial Park.
