Sharon Bailes Perry

Leicester - Sharon Bailes Perry, 66, of Leicester, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2014, at the CarePartners Solace Center in Asheville after a long struggle with cancer. She will be missed greatly by all that knew and loved her. She was born in Beckley, West Virginia to Ruth and Keith Bailes in 1948. She attended George Washington University and the College of William and Mary, receiving a Bachelors of Science - Physics in 1970. She also attended George Mason University receiving a Master of Science - Systems Engineering degree. Sharon was a public school teacher in the fields of mathematics and science for almost thirty years mostly in the northern Virginia area.

She is survived by her husband, Alan Cohlmeyer; sons, Matt Perry and Craig Perry; siblings, Lynn, Steven and Janet; and granddaughters, Jasmine and Sydney; as well as step-children, Doug (with daughter Hathaway) and Siri Cohlmeyer; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Sharon retired to the Leicester community in 2001, becoming very active in several community-based groups, including the Friends of the Leicester Library, the Leicester Elementary School Children's Christmas Project and the Leicester Community Center Board where she was the guiding force in the establishment of the monthly Fresh Produce Distribution Program which is still on-going. She was an avid Master Gardener, member of UNCA's College for Seniors and along with her husband one of the founding members of the UNCA Mountain Smooth Dance team. She loved to read, research genealogy, and she also traveled extensively both before and after retirement. At the time of her passing Sharon was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Asheville.

A private graveyard service will be held at the family cemetery in West Virginia in early August, followed by a memorial service at the nearby North River Mills Methodist Church which will be presided over by her niece, the Rev. Heather Bailes Baker.
