Lexington - Mr. Vernon Joseph "Jack" Merrell, 82, of Lexington, passed away Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 19, 1930 in Starnes Cove, NC to Alton Davis Merrell and Sudie Cannon Merrell. Mr. Merrell graduated from Sand Hills High School in 1949 and joined the U.S. Navy in 1950. He served on the USS LSMR527 and the USS LST 855 and was Honorably Discharged in 1954. Mr. Merrell drove for Hennis Freight Lines from September 1956 until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of Canaan United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alton Davis Merrell, Jr. Surviving are his wife whom he married on May 4, 1996, Phyllis Tuttle Clements Merrell; a brother, Samuel Winston Jones; his god children, Carolyn Tesh (Greg), Gary Koontz (Tammy) and Michael Koontz (Dawn); step children, Donna Mayes (Mike), Beth Taylor, Jo Smith (Bill), Tracy Wise (Chad) and James Dee Clements (Gail). Also surviving are many cousins, grandchildren and great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Canaan United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Miller and Pastor Harold Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
