Black Mountain - William Harvey McMurray, Jr., 92, of Black Mountain passed away September 25, 2013 at Highland Farms.
A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of William Harvey and Alberta Brown McMurray.
Bill was a graduate of Swannanoa High School, Mars Hill College, and Presbyterian College. He was active in sports, playing on the All-State basketball team at Presbyterian College.
He entered the U.S. Army at Camp Wheeler, GA. He served at Fort Custer in Michigan until the Japanese Surrender in 1945.
He married Mary Loftis of Clinton, SC on May 5, 1945.
After the war, he joined his father at McMurray Chevrolet Co. and worked with his son, Bob until the dealership sold in 1989.
He was active in community affairs; he was one of the four who started the Swannanoa Valley Museum. He was a Clerk of the Session in the Swannanoa Presbyterian Church where he was a member prior to his membership at Black Mountain Presbyterian.
Mr. McMurray was the recipient of the Rotary John K. Abernathy Award, Past President of the Black Mountain/Swannanoa Chamber, Past President of Kiwanis Club, and he and his wife served as Grand Marshalls of the Black Mountain Christmas Parade.
He was well loved by family, business associates and community. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener, and owner of several bird dogs.
Also preceding him in death are his brothers, John H. McMurray and Clarence McCain McMurray and daughter, Mary Elizabeth McMurray.
Bill is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Mary Loftis McMurray; children, Bill and wife, Ann of Lexington, NC, Bob and wife, Pam of Black Mountain, Cathy Skeen and husband, Stan of Swannanoa and David and wife, Sarah of Charlotte; sister, Betty Rand and husband, Joe of Black Mountain; grandchildren, Mary Beth and husband, John Hoomani, Brooke and husband, Andrew Ayers; Laura and husband, Clint Farish, Sarah and husband, Nathan West, Matt Skeen and wife, Salam, Lucy Skeen, Katie McMurray and Brown McMurray; great grandchildren, Campbell, Hoke, Hayden, McCain, Gracyn, Ella, Adeline, Colton, Mattison and Carter.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Monday, September 30, 2013 at 2:00 pm in Black Mountain Presbyterian Church with Rev. Shannon Kershner officiating.
The family will receive friends Sunday, September 29, 2013 from 4:00 to 6:00pm at Harwood Home for Funerals.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, Swannanoa Presbyterian Church or Swannanoa Valley Museum.
Arrangements are in the care of Harwood Home for Funerals.
