Alexander J. Purta, 75, formerly of Mountain Top, died Friday afternoon, Dec. 20, 2013, at Fellowship Community Manor, Whitehall.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, on Sept. 8, 1938, a son of the late Alexander J. and Alice Jamiolowski Purta. He was a graduate of Marymount High School and received his associate degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University. He was employed as a lead project engineer by Intersil Semi Conductor Corp., Mountain Top, for many years. Alexander was an Army veteran, having served as a radar repair instructor with the U.S. Army Signal Corps.

Alexander was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was an active member of St. Jude's Church, Mountain Top, where he served a lector for 35 years and as chairman of the annual bazaar for 25 years. He was also a member of the financial projects committee.

He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6440 of Mountain Top, where he was a Faithful Navigator. He also was a member of Council 302 of Wilkes-Barre, where he was the chairman of Northeast Board of District Deputies, having been active with the organization since 1974.

Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Barbara Trudnak Purta; and his daughter, Melissa Faura and her husband, Xavier, Macungie; grandchildren, Juan Alexander and Anna Faura; brother, Bernard Purta, The Villages, Fla.; sister, Frances Kraus, Chula Vista, Calif.; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Monday from the Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Jude's Church, 420 S. Mountain Blvd., (state Route 309), Mountain Top. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Mary of the Maternity Cemetery, West Wyoming.

Friends may call Monday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Capital Campaign at St. Jude's Church, 420 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top, PA 18707.
