Charles G. (Kaz) Umlah, 82, of Wilkes-Barre Township passed away peacefully Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, in Hartford Hospital, Hartford, Conn., surrounded by many members of his caring family.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre Township on Feb. 18, 1930, a son of the late George F. and Josephine Smigelski Umlah.

Charles was a graduate of Wilkes-Barre Township High School, Class of 1949, where he excelled in football, baseball and basketball. His love of sports stayed with him for all of his life. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and the New York Giants.

Proudly serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he was awarded the Purple Heart medal.

He was employed by Bell Telephone, which later became Verizon in Wilkes-Barre, retiring in 1998.

He was a member of St. Andrew's Parish, Wilkes-Barre, and a member of Wilkes-Barre Township American Legion Post 815 and a former member of Catholic War Veterans Post 274, Ashley.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Meehan Umlah, and by brothers, Joseph F. and Bernard J. Umlah.

Surviving are his loving sister, Ruth Marie Umlah Polinski and caring "brother" in-law, Walt Polinski, East Hartford, Conn., with whom he resided for the past two months; sister-in-law, Mary Jo Meehan Buta and husband, Ed, North Arlington, N.J.; nephews, Dan Polinski and wife, Wanda, and their children, Adam, Emma and Hannah, Coventry, Conn.; George Polinski and friend, Shirley Babiec, East Hartford, Conn.; Jerry Umlah and wife, Andrea, and their children, Emily and Natalie, Hanover Township; Joe Umlah and wife, LuAnn, Virginia Beach, Va., and their children, Brian Umlah and wife, Laura, Iowa City, Iowa, Stacey Emanuele and husband, Michael, sons, Joshua and Christopher, Virgina Beach, Va.; nieces, Linda Dulude and husband, Patrick, and their son, Nicholas, Tolland, Conn.; Mary Ann Umlah Sawicki and husband, Len, and their daughters, Danielle, Courtney and Ashleigh, Wilkes-Barre; along with many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nephews in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Iowa, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Michigan.

Charlie was a very caring family man, uncle, great-uncle and godfather to many. He was loved by his entire extended family.

Charles, Charlie, Kaz will be greatly missed by all, especially by his friends at McDonald's in Wilkes-Barre Township, where he faithfully went every day for the last six years for his early-morning breakfast and conversation. He will be missed by the members of American Legion Post 815 in Wilkes-Barre Township, where he enjoyed the "food and friends."

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. in St. Andrew's Parish, 316 Parrish St., Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
