Frank Kalkbrenner passed away peacefully after a short illness in Wilkes-Barre General Hospital on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014.

Frank was born in Rapid City, S.D., on Oct. 28, 1940, the only child of Raymond and Clara Cottle Kalkbrenner.

He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1958. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1962, and his Master of Science degree in engineering from University of Washington, Seattle, in 1969.

During his time in Seattle he met his future wife, Helen Wells Kalkbrenner. They were married in Seattle on March 27, 1965, and would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary in 2014.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, and his cat, Michael, as well as many treasured friends.

Over his long and successful career, Frank worked as a semiconductor design engineer for Boeing Aerospace, General Electric, and Fairchild Semiconductor in Mountain Top, from which he retired in January 2002.

He was a member of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, local Chapter 11 Frances Dorrance; a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church; and was secretary-treasurer of Valley Cat Rescue for the past 10 years.

Since his retirement, Frank enjoyed pursuing his passions of fishing, target shooting, and amateur archeology. But his favorite pastime was caring for the many cats at Valley Cat Rescue's Adoption Center, for whom he was playmate, trainer, socializer, and caregiver all in one, and who returned his love for them in equal measure.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at E. Blake Collins Funeral Home, 159 George Ave., Parsons section of Wilkes-Barre.

Interment will be on Jan. 21, 2014, in Frank's family's plot in Rapid City, S.D.

In lieu of flowers, Helen requests that donations be made in Frank's memory to the SPCA of Luzerne County's Spay/Neuter Assistance Fund. Checks made out to "SPCA of Luzerne County" may be mailed in care of Valley Cat Rescue, P.O. Box 242, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18703-0242.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.eblakecollins.com.
