John J. Franks, 89, of Steelton, formerly of Wilkes-Barre, passed away Monday, May 12, 2014, in the Harrisburg Hospital.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 11, 1924, a son of the late John and Stella Kochuba Frankowiak.

John was a graduate of GAR Memorial High School.

He was an Army veteran serving in Company C, 634th Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II and he was a recipient of the Silver Star and the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with five Bronze Stars.

John was employed as a refrigeration specialist by the Gibbons Brewery. He was a member of Pipefitters and Plumbers Union Local 524 in Scranton and was later employed for many years as a steamfitter by the Susquehanna Nuclear Power Plant in Salem Township, prior to his retirement.

John was preceded in death by a wife, Mary Schappert Franks, in 1988.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Hanshaw Franks; sons, Richard Franks and his wife, Sandra, Mountain Top; and David Franks, Lake Orion, Mich.; three grandchildren, Brian Franks and his wife, Beth, Alicia Fisher and her husband, Andrew, and Cameron Franks; great-granddaughter, Riley Franks; brother, Bernard Franks and his wife, Joan, Bethlehem; sisters, Theresa Mycko, Wilkes-Barre; and Leona Kirwan, Watchung, N.J.; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday from Nat & Gawlas Funeral Home, 89 Park Ave., Wilkes-Barre, with Monsignor Joseph G. Rauscher officiating.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Monday.
