John (Jack) J. Rinkus Jr., 78, of Lancaster, Calif., formerly of Avoca, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013, in Antelope Valley Hospital, Lancaster, Calif.

He was born in New York on Feb. 6, 1936, and was the son of the late John Sr. and Helen Dixon Rinkus.
He had resided in Lancaster, Calif., for 36 years. He was a graduate of Penn State University.
John served and retired from the U.S. Air Force having served from 1954 to 1977. After retirement, he worked for 23 years for the Civil Service as a chief management analyst.
John, along with his wife, Jean, volunteered their time for more than 20 years to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, California.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Healey Rinkus, who passed away Dec. 9, 2011; and his son, Michael A Rinkus.
Jack is survived by his son, John J. Rinkus III, Lancaster, Calif.; daughter, Lisa A. Hogarth, Boise, Idaho; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Delores Perry, West Pittston; and Marion Shandra, Scranton; and many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, Jan. 14, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lancaster, Calif.
Interment services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in St. Mary's Cemetery, Avoca.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kiesinger Funeral Services Inc., 255 McAlpine St., Duryea. The AMVETS Honor Guard of Dupont will provide military honors.
