Rocco (Rocky) Mele, 94, a resident of Mountain Top, died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Mele was born in Manhattan, New York City, son of Phillip and Anna Mele. He was a graduate of Textile High School, New York City, and served as a technical sergeant in the Army with the 12th Engineer Combat Battalion in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and in Central Europe during World War II. He earned the American Defense Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, three overseas bars, four bronze service campaign stars and the Bronze Star medal.
Following his military service, he joined the U.S. Postal Service and had been a letter carrier in Jamaica, Queens, for 30 years. He had moved to Pennsylvania in the 1960s and had attended Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, Plymouth.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
Surviving are his wife, the former Kerry Ashton, at home; stepchildren, Josh and Ashley Stoffel, both at home; stepdaughter, Brittany Hayes and her husband, Jon, Buffalo, N.Y.; grandchildren, Addison and Kayden Hayes; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the family home, Wright Township.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorial donations in Mr. Mele's name be made to the Luzerne County SPCA, Fox Hill Road, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
Arrangements are by H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home Inc., a Golden Rule Funeral Home, 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre.
