Russell Edmund Smith, 75, of Shavertown, formerly of Plainville, Conn., passed away Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at the United Methodist Homes Wesley Village Campus, Jenkins Township.

He was born in Plainville, Conn., on Aug. 15, 1938, to the late Loyal Lauridsen Smith and Mary Fleming Smith. He graduated from Plainville High School in 1956, and was president of the senior class. At PHS he played football, basketball and baseball, pitching for the Blue Devils. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. He was a Monogram Club member at Notre Dame, earning his letter as the manager of the baseball team.

Russ went to work in the Field Lease Department of Aetna Life Insurance Co., Hartford, Conn., in 1960 and remained at Aetna until 1989, when he retired as an officer of the company. He then relocated the family to Pennsylvania to work for Prudential Asset Management Co. as director of defined contribution until he retired again in 1994.

He was an active member of Our Lady of Mercy Church, Plainville, Conn., initially serving as an altar boy in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as serving for many years on the parish finance council. He later became an active member of St. Therese's Church, Shavertown, also serving on the parish finance council.

Russ was a founding member of the Tridex Investment Club, Plainville, Conn. He was also a founding member of the Plainville Exchange Club. He was co-owner of Connecticut Gold Stamping, a business he shared with his good friend, Thomas P. Maskery. He continued his lifelong interest in sports, playing golf and softball in Plainville's "Over 35" league.

Russ is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Patricia Blair Smith; their four children, Cara Smith Shackelford and her husband, Patrick, Erwin, N.C.; Michael Loyal Smith and his wife, Sandra, Milford, Ohio; Maureen Hamilton Doctoroff and her husband, Jeffrey, Medfield, Mass.; and Samuel Franklin Smith, Natick, Mass.; and six granddaughters, Julia Shackelford, Diana Shackelford, Maura Smith, Abigail Smith, Hannah Doctoroff and Lillian Doctoroff. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy Smith Wrona and her husband, Edward, Wallingford, Conn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Therese's Church, Pioneer Avenue and Davis Street, Shavertown. The Rev. James J. Paisley will officiate. Friends may call prior to the service from noon to 12:45 p.m. Thursday at the church.

A prayer service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St., Plainville, Conn. Interment will be made in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Plainville, Conn. Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home.
