Retired Jackson Police Officer, Bennie D. Harrell, Jr. passed away Monday April 22, 2013, at Crossgates River Oaks Hospital. At the time of his death he was 92 and a resident of Peach Tree Village in Brandon. Visitation will be from 10am to 11am Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Lakewood Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at 11am from Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton. The celebration of his life will be conducted at graveside by Pastor Bob Haller of Colonial Heights Baptist Church.

Mr. Harrell was born in Natchez, MS on May 19, 1920 to Bennie D. Harrell, Sr. and his wife Annie Laura Whitehead Harrell. He lived in Natchez until the age of four when he and his family moved to Jackson, MS. Mr. Harrell was called to active duty with his National Guard Unit during World II while a senior at Jackson Central High School. He also served on active duty in the Army and Air Corp. While stationed in Blytheville, AR, Bennie met and married Eva Ruth Brisendine and they had two children Pete and Judy. He later worked for the Jackson Police Department where he retired after twenty five years as Inspector over Field Services in 1974. He was a graduate of the 67th Session 1961 Class of the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA . Following his retirement from Jackson Police Department he worked with the Mississippi Attorney General's Office under A. F. Summer in the Organized Crime Division followed by a career with the Jackson Public School Transportation Department. Bennie Harrell was an active member of Boling Street United Methodist Church and later Colonial Heights Baptist Church. He made a profession of faith as a youth in 1931 while living on Bailey Avenue in Jackson and attending Davis Memorial Baptist Church. Mr. Harrell is preceded in death by his parents and his second wife, Lois Sims Williams Harrell, his brother-in-law, James M. Newman of Germantown, TN and one grandson, Bennie (Ben) D. Harrell, IV of Smyrna, TN. He is survived by his special friend, Margaret Denham of Ridgeland, MS and one son, Bennie (Pete) D. Harrell, III and his wife Kay of Bell Buckle, TN., his daughter and son-in-law Judy and Dewayne Colburn of Brandon. He has two step-children, Myra Williams Ottewell and her husband John of Surrey, B.C., Canada and stepson Eddie Williams and his wife Priscilla of Austin, Texas. His sister, Juanita (Nita) Harrell Newman resides in Germantown, TN. His surviving grandchildren are, Tammy Mitchell and husband Gary of Vancleave, MS, Jeff Jones, Perkinston, MS, Jim Jones and wife Jennifer of Pelahatchie, MS and Karen Gibson of Murfreesboro, TN. He is also survived by Penny Harrell (wife of the late Ben Harrell) of Smyrna, TN. Mr. Harrell has nine great grandchildren, Marissa Vazquez, Lake Jones, Shelby Gibson, Jackson Jones, Sidney Gibson, Cole Jones, Jordan Jones, Bennie (Bo) D. Harrell, V and Ella Harrell. He has four step-granddaughters. Lindsey, Lauren and Whitney Williams of Port Aransas, TX and Tracy Williams of Shreveport, LA. Other survivors include his niece, Pennie Newman Barclay, of Collierville, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Colonial Heights Baptist Church Building Fund and mailed to 444 Northpark Drive, Ridgeland, MS 39157.
