Bob Hand, beloved husband, skilled surgeon, gifted musician, avid hunter and angler, decorated war veteran and father and grandfather passed away at his home on Grand Isle, Louisiana. While born in New Orleans, Bob grew up in Philadelphia, MS. He played first chair trumpet for the Mississippi Lions All State Band while attending Philadelphia High School, which qualified for and won the international marching band competition in 1955. He also played high school football at Philadelphia High and was voted "most handsome" of his 1957 senior class. Bob attended Ole Miss and played trumpet for the "Pride of the South," the Ole Miss marching band during his freshman year in 1958. He went on to play in various jazz bands, traveling around the South for performances at clubs and college parties.
Bob went on to Tulane Medical School along with his twin brother, Bill Hand, and then completed his internship at McCleod Infirmary in Florence, SC. He went on to pursue a residency in Orthopedics at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans. He then completed a hand fellowship at Vanderbilt University and once treated Chet Atkins for a hand injury. His medical training was interrupted with a tour in Vietnam in Cam Ranh Bay where he served as a captain and surgical medical officer in a M.A.S.H. unit for two years in the Air Force.
Bob spent most of his career in private practice in Monroe, LA where he earned his accreditation with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Bob became an avid duck hunter while in Monroe, hunting as much during the season as his career would allow. Bob was also a licensed pilot, earning his VFR license while serving in the Air Force and later his IFR rating in his 40s. Bob owned an interest in a small plane, which he used for personal travel and scouting out hunting sites. Bob moved to his fishing paradise of Grand Isle, LA where he supervised orthopedic residents at the Chabert Charity Hospital in Houma, LA. Post-Katrina, Bob practiced at the Jackson V.A. Hospital until 2008 before complete retirement on Grand Isle.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Jackie Allen Hand of Grand Isle and his sons, David Hand and his wife Jennifer of Nashville, TN; and John Hand, his wife, Shawndell and the granddaughters Mary Blake, MacKenzie and Lilla of Atlanta, GA; and their sons David Kinnard, his wife Kimberlee and grandson Calvin of Greer, SC; Roger Kinnard, his wife Brooke and grandsons Garrett, Ben and Marshall of Pensacola, FL; and Shand Kinnard of Atlanta, GA; and Bob's twin brother, William "Bill" L.
