While born in New Orleans, Bob grew up in Philadelphia, MS. He played first chair trumpet for the Mississippi Lions All State Band while attending Philadelphia High School, which qualified for and won the international marching band competition in 1955. He also played high school football at Philadelphia High and was voted "most handsome" of his 1957 senior class. Bob attended Ole Miss and played trumpet for the "Pride of the South," the Ole Miss marching band during his freshman year in 1958.
