Elmo Simpson Allen, Jr.
Mr. Elmo Simpson Allen, Jr., 90, passed away July 20, 2014 at his home. Funeral services are scheduled for 2 PM Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Natchez Trace Funeral Chapel in Madison with interment in Natchez Trace Memorial Park. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM.
Mr. Allen attended Carr Central High School in Vicksburg before enlisting in the U.S. Navy upon the outbreak of WWII. He served aboard the USS Copahee carrier in the Guadalcanal Campaign and on the USS Edgar G. Chase in the Atlantic. He also served in the Korean War aboard the USS Compton.
Mr. Allen worked for the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller for 31 years. He also was a flight instructor and an Ag. Pilot. Since 1978, Mr. Allen had been a member of the C.A.F., an organization for the preservation and restoration of WWII aircraft and helped organize the MS Wing of the C.A.F. He also helped build the C.A.F. hanger at the Madison airport which houses WWII aircraft and memorabilia. Mr. Allen was instrumental in getting the Warren County War Memorial built for those lost in WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam wars. He and his wife, Katherine helped host 23 D.E. 16 USS Edgar G. Chase ship's reunion with the last one being a cruise. He was the oldest living member of the V.F.W. Vicksburg Post. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laura Wells.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Katherine B. Allen; daughter, Linda Ann Ledford (Kenny); son, Larry Nelson Allen (Tammy); step daughter, Tina Gainer; step son, Gene Williams (Lougenia); grandchildren, Christopher Wells, Jr., David Wells, Bethany McBeth, Kristi Walker, Nelson Allen, Scott Allen, Hanna Allen and Shannon Ledford and 11 great grandchildren.
