Frances Gilbert Martin, 95 of Grenada, died Saturday, August 10, 2013 at her residence. She was born November 8, 1917 in Gilbert, Louisiana to Jess Carr Gilbert and Fannie Adams. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, the D.A.R, Daughters of Founders and Patriots of Americas, Daughters of 1812, Southern Dames of America, Dames of the Country Honor, as well as a life-member and past president of Grenada Junior Auxiliary. She remained an active member of numerous historical and genealogical organizations as long as her health permitted. She was certified by the National Genealogical Society, and with her husband compiled a book, "Cemeteries of Grenada County and Surrounding Areas."

She was a graduate of Wisner High School in Wisner, Louisiana, Virginia Intermont Junior College in Bristol, Virginia and earned her B.S. degree from Louisiana State University where she was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. She earned her Master's degree from the University of Mississippi.

She was married to John William Martin, a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Air Corps, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on March 23, 1942 by Chaplain John Stuart Bennett, who later became Chief of Chaplains of the U.S. Air Corps. She worked in the Louisiana State Department of Public Welfare, the Department of Commerce and Industry and also as a secretary to the base surgeon of Harding Field in Baton Rouge. When her husband was deployed, she lived with her mother in Wisner, until World War II ended and she was reunited with her husband. She was later employed as both a school teacher and school librarian.

Along with her family activities, Frances enjoyed traveling. She has visited all 50 states and 32 countries on 5 continents.

She is survived by two children John William (Bill) Martin, Jr. (Barbara) of Atlanta, Georgia and Dr. Martha Martin Cofer, of Grenada; grandchildren, John Martin Cofer, Anne Jennings Cofer, Lynn Carson (Rollie) all of Oxford, Amy Carson Groves (Chris) of Charleston, SC, Brian Carson (Rebekah) of Bonneville, CA, one brother, J.C. "Sonny" Gilbert Jr. of Sicily Island, Louisiana, and her daughter-in-law Paula Sims Martin of Grenada.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John William Martin and one son, James Gilbert Martin (Jim) and son-in-law, Edwin T. (Eddie) Cofer.

Visitation will be, Monday, August 12, 2013 from 4:00-5:00 P.M. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home in Grenada, MS. Funeral services will follow at 5:00 P.M. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jack Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Memorial Park.
