George W. (Bill) McCarthy, 87, died January 20, 2013, from complications of pneumonia at St. Dominic's Hospital.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Madison on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 10:00 AM with burial to follow at Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland. Visitation and a wake service will be held at St. Francis on Wednesday, January 23, 2013, from 5:00 until 7:00 PM.

Mr. McCarthy was a Hattiesburg native and had lived in Madison since 1994. He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi and Tulane University

Mr. McCarthy was a World War II and Korean Conflict Veteran. During World War II he was a Prisoner of War in Germany for ten and one half months. He completed thirty three years of military service with National Guard and Army Reserves and retired as a Colonel in 1978.

Mr. McCarthy retired as Director of the Bureau of Administration with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health in 1986.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-one years, Maureen Robertson McCarthy and by his son-in-law, Ralph Alan McDonald. He is survived by his wife Carlene Brown McCarthy of Madison and his four children; sons, Bill (Pat) of Columbia, SC, Jay (Donna) of Madison, daughters, Lynn Slay (Avery) of Brandon, and Mary McDonald of Madison. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Cory Slay (Kristi) of Olathe, KS, Justin Slay (Esther) of Brandon, Maureen McDonald and Daniel McDonald of Madison, Mary Elizabeth McCarthy of Sans Francisco, CA, Will McCarthy of Columbia, SC, and Liza McCarthy of Madison and by four great grandchildren.
