Helen Armstrong Lowry
Helen Elizabeth (Betty) Armstrong Lowry, 75, of Jamestown, NC, died on April 7, 2014, of cancer. She was a native of Hazlehurst, MS, the daughter of John T. and Helen Saunders Armstrong.
Betty graduated from Hazlehurst High School and attended MSCW before obtaining a B.A. degree in English from the University of Mississippi, and a Master's degree from Tulane.
Betty and Ivan Lowry (now deceased) were married in 1961. They settled in Jamestown, NC, in 1973 after living in Baton Rouge, Charleston, SC, and Chattanooga. She devoted her career to teaching English at the high school and college level. In 2008 Betty married Robert Clendenin at the chapel in Yellowstone National Park. She had a great love of travel, literature, music, learning and good food. She shared those joys in many good times with her family and friends, who will dearly miss her care, energy, intelligence, conversation, and ambitious itineraries. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, NC.
Betty is survived by her husband, Robert Clendenin; two children, Elizabeth Borland and husband, William, of Decatur, GA, and Michael Lowry and wife, Bonny Moellenbrock, of Durham, NC; four granddaughters, Mara Elizabeth Lowry, Sophie Grace Lowry, Reagan Elizabeth Borland and Miranda Grace Borland; two brothers , John T. Armstrong, Jr. and wife Sarah of Hazlehurst, MS, and James S. Armstrong and wife Carey of Jackson, MS.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, NC.
