Lucille Peel Cox

Columbia, SC

Lucille Peel Cox has found eternal peace, and is at home with her Lord and Savior. After spending the week of her 93rd birthday with all three of her daughters and her sons-in-law, on Thursday, April 25, 2013, she took her final trip to her heavenly home with dignity and grace.

Having spent most of her adult life in Jackson, MS, she had resided in Columbia, SC since November 2011.

Lucille was born on April 12, 1920, in Telephone, TX to Claude Peel and Mae Weaver Peel. After spending her early years in Texas, she moved with her family to Skene, MS, and graduated from Skene High School. She then worked her way through Delta State Teachers College in Cleveland, MS, where she received a Bachelor's Degree in Education.

Although Lucy, as she would later be known, had a varied and successful teaching and business career, she was first and foremost an incredibly loving and devoted mother to her three daughters, a role she embraced up until her very final days.

In her early married days, Lucille taught school in Skene, MS, and Auburn, AL. Then, in the late 1960s, she embarked on a long and impressive real estate career. She established her own real estate firm, Cox Realty, in Northeast Jackson; served a term as President of the Jackson Board of Realtors; was named its Realtor of the Year in 1973, and served as chairman of the Ethics Committee. She served as a Colonel on Governor Bill Waller's staff, and was appointed as Chairman of the Mississippi Veterans' Farm and Home Loan Board from 1972 - 1976. She was pleased to have been the first woman ever appointed to that Board.

Lucille was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, Dr. Samuel Ardessa Cox; her parents; two brothers, Claude Allen Peel and Hubert Peel; and two sisters, Bess Peel Knudsen and Lillian Peel Wilson.

Surviving to cherish her memory are three daughters: Ann Cox (Al) Allen, of Ocean Springs, MS; Martha Cox Brooks (Richard Larkin) of Bolton, MA; and Mary Cox (Larry) McDaniel, of Columbia, SC; five grandsons, David (Kris) Allen, of Gulfport, MS; Mike (Lidia) Allen, of Ocean Springs, MS; Jason (Sarah Stevens)Brooks, of Belchertown, MA; Taylor (Jill) Brooks, of Lancaster, MA; and Hunter McDaniel, of Columbia, SC; and six great grandchildren, Kelsey Allen, Sam Allen, Riley Brooks, Ali Stevens, Callie Langworthy, and Erin Langworthy.

The family expresses its appreciation to all those who have lifted Mother in their prayers, and to those who have provided special loving care to her and the family.

There will be a graveside service at Parkway Memorial Cemetery, 1161 Highland Colony Parkway, Ridgeland, MS, at 2:00PM Sunday, April 28, 2013, with the Reverend Patsy Twiner officiating. Wright & Ferguson is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Autism Society, 4340 East-West Hwy, Suite 350, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.
