Port Gibson

Mrs. Mildred Ann Ellis Nasif died Monday, March 3, 2014 at Claiborne County Senior Care. She was 92.

Mrs. Nasif was born in Port Gibson, MS on May 30, 1921. She was the youngest child of the late James Ellis and Lula Thomas Ellis and the wife of the late Murad Ameen Nasif. She was a member of Port Gibson United Methodist Church in Port Gibson, where she served on the board of directors, taught Sunday School and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was also active in the Cursillo Movement in Mississippi.

She was a graduate of Port Gibson High School where she was recognized as salutatorian of her class.

She attended the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL, the University of Mississippi and Louisiana State University where she received a BS degree with a double major in Mathematics and Physical Education. She was a member of Mu Alpha Theta National Honorary Mathematics Society. She began her teaching career in Orange, TX where she taught for three years. Following that time she taught higher mathematics and coached tennis and archery at Baily High School in Jackson, MS. Some years later she became a member of the mathematics faculty at Chamberlain Hunt Academy in Port Gibson.

Along with her husband, Murad Nasif, they owned and operated M and M Super Store in Port Gibson. They were members of the Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations through which they contributed to the community in various capacities. She had a love and an appreciation for Port Gibson and its people that grew througout her lifetime. Her final years were spent at Claiborne County Senior Care Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Nannette Nasif Gholston and husband Robert of Starkville, MS; sons Douglas A. Nasif and wife Rebecca of Port Gibson and Ellis M. Nasif and wife Betty of Hazlehurst, MS; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Port Gibson United Methodist Church with Rev. David Harrison and Rev. Margaret Ayers officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 Thursday until the hour of the service. Burial will follow in Wintergreen Cemetery with Glenwood Funeral Home in charge of services.

Pallbearers will be Matt Gholston, Brian Shannon, Gabriel Nasif, Nathan Nasif, Ryan Nasif, Daniel Nasif and John Gholston. Honorary pallbearers will be Dennis Staer and Sammie Howard.
