Robert Campbell Wingate, 92, passed away Tuesday, January 1, 2013 at The Episcopal Church Home. Born in Greenville, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Ney E. and Annie (Campbell) Wingate. He served as SG in the U.S. Air Force during WWII then earned his MBA from Northwestern University, after which he founded and owned RC Wingate and Ford CPA Firm. As an active member of his community, he had served as President of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, Director at the Bank of Commerce-Greenwood, was the longtime treasurer and instigator at the Greenwood Investment Club, an Officer with the Greenwood Country Club and a trustee with the Howell Foundation. He was a member of the Church of the Nativity, where he served in the vestry. Known for his passion of the outdoors and routinely walking, he was also an avid reader, accomplished fisherman and golf and tennis club champion. Despite accomplishing so much in his 92 years, he always had time to bless those around him with his unique humor and wit as a husband and as a loving and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all.
Robert was preceded in death by wife, Elizabeth Ball Wingate. He is survived by his daughter, Ann Wingate Cross (Joe); grandchildren, Brittany Miles (Kurt), Jonathan Cross (Caia) and Jared Cross; his great-grandson and little buddy, Jackson Cross; step-daughter, Lynda Alsop Bain (Frank); grandchildren, Lacy Hilbrich (Lucas), Elizabeth Goodman (Chad) and Robert "Bo" Bain (Mandy); and six great-grandchildren, Anna Jane, Ally, Charlie, Emerson, Abby and Hunter.
Memorial services celebrating his life will be 11 am Friday at St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church, 6710 Wolf Pen Branch Road, Harrods Creek, KY 40027. The Wingate-Cross Family invites his friends to join them at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2013 at the Greenville Cemetery, 1000 S. Main St., Greenville, MS for the inurnment. Friends and family may gather 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the home of Joe and Ann Wingate Cross, 9101 Dayflower St., Prospect, KY 40059. Pearson's Funeral Directors, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, KY 40207 has been entrusted with the arrangements.
