Thomas Johnston Marler, age 92, of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at his home with his family by his side. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at Chancellor Funeral Home in Byram on Monday, May 19 from 5-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11am on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Byram, Mississippi. Graveside services will follow immediately at Lakewood Memorial Park in Clinton, Mississippi.
Thomas Johnston Marler was born in Darling, Mississippi on June 12, 1921. He served his country as a member of the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He was stationed at Fort Hood and Shepherd's Air Force Base, Texas. After the war, he began a career in carpentry and was known to many in his community as one of the best and most talented Master craftsmen and woodworkers of his time. He loved his work and was recognized for his specialty in circular staircases over the last 70 years in homes and buildings in Jackson and the surrounding area. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church since 1956, where he served in many capacities including chairman of the deacons and more recently honored as deacon emeritus. He also pioneered the youth program and taught Sunday School. He designed and built the first Living Cross at Hillcrest along with many other special projects, and he also served as the Brotherhood President of the Hinds-Madison Baptist Association.
He is survived by Ellen Barber Marler, his wife of 73 years; his sons, Melvin Marler and wife, Linda of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Ray Marler and wife, Sharon of Crystal Springs, Terry Marler and wife, Sheila of Jackson, Brad Marler and wife, Laura of Jackson, and his daughter, Anita Morgan and husband, Richard of Clinton. His daughter, June Odom, preceded him in death. Survivors also include 22 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great grandchildren.
