PEMBROKE - Donald W. Demers, 83, of Buck Street, died after a lengthy illness Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack.

Born on Feb. 4, 1930, to Willie and Esther (Levesque) Demers, Don was a lifelong Pembroke resident. He served for two years with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and then spent over 22 years working at the Chicopee Mills in Manchester. He also did custodial work for several companies until his retirement.
Devoted to his church, Don served as a Eucharistic minister for St. John the Baptist Church, making communion calls at homes and the Concord Hospital. He was also a faithful volunteer at the Padre Pio Eucharistic Chapel in Concord, a regular attendee at the Precious Blood Monastery in Manchester, and a former member of the Knights of Columbus.
Don loved the ocean and was an avid card player. He was a master cribbage player and tried to play at least once a day. Even more Don loved his family and spending time with them all.
Members of his family include his wife of 61 years, Barbara (Caswell) Demers of Pembroke; three children, David Demers and his wife, Cindi, of Sanford, Maine, Daniel Demers and his wife, Sharleen, of Pembroke and Denise Lavoie and her partner Gilles Ouellette of Penacook; six grandchildren, Kelly, Alison, Ryan, Nicholas, Troy and Andrew; two step-grandchildren, Jeremy and Nick; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Viola Carrier of Hooksett; and nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are Thursday, Oct. 31, from 9 a.m. to noon at Petit Funeral Home, 167 Main St., Pembroke, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 12:30 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Allenstown.
Burial with military honors will take place at St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
