HILLSVILLE, Va. - Robert L. Johnson, formerly of Boscawen, died peacefully at his home in Hillsville, Va. Saturdya, May 25, 2013. He was born in Rochester, on April 28, 1920, the son of Elmer S. and Helen Cate Johnson. Bob earned his pilot's license while attending Keene State College and, after graduating in 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a flight instructor and a transport pilot, flying the wounded from combat areas in the South Pacific.

Bob was employed at Evans Printing Company in Concord for 37 years, retiring as Vice President. He was a Founder and Past President of the NH Graphic Arts Association and Chair of the Governor's Committee on Government Printing. He served as Selectman (1950-52) and Town Moderator (1955-1987) in Boscawen and was the first chairman of the Boscawen Planning Board. He was a member of the Penacook-Boscawen Water Precinct (1949-1950) and a member of the first School Board for the Merrimack Valley Regional School District. A lifelong musician, Bob had a band while in college and played with Nevers Band in Concord, and with his children and grandchildren at home. A licensed amateur radio operator (W1ZFP) for more than 50 years, he was also active in the NH American Radio Relay League and President of the Concord Brasspounders. The Johnson family spent many summer vacations at Highland Lake in Andover. Bob and his wife also had a winter home in Naples, Fla.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 70 years, Alice; five children, Robert L. Johnson Jr. (Lillian), Susan J. Fansmith (John), Eric S. Johnson, Sharon J. Confessore (Gary) and Jeffrey T. Johnson (Sharon); five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his sister, Sarah Huckins.

Robert was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His unfailing integrity, good judgment, and unique sense of humor made him a respected and beloved member of his community.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 29, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Church in Woodlawn, Va.

Burial will be held Friday, May 31 at 1:30 p.m. at the NH State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

The family will receive friends at the Boscawen Town Hall, following.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a memorial in Bob's name at St. Joseph Parish, 99 Joy Ranch Road, Woodlawn, VA 24381.
