Herman Maricich Obituary
Herman L Maricich Oct. 25, 1923-Jan. 4, 2014 Former Oakland Resident Herman Maricich was born in Oakland, CA, the only child to Louis and Belle Maricich. He took to ice skating at an early age, starting with speed skates and, shortly thereafter, figure skates. He entered several local and state figure skating competitions, eventually becoming men's state novice champion in Feb. 1945 while on furlough as a flight officer in the U.S. Air Force. As a Business Administration student at UC Berkeley, Maricich played on the ice hockey team. In Dec. 1948 he was invited to skate in the Sun Valley, Idaho winter ice show. Maricich became a professional ice skater who toured the U.S. and South America with shows that included a stint with Sonja Henie, world famous Olympic Champion and star of several movies. But the lure of nature and outdoor skating eventually called him back to Sun Valley, where he settled into a long and illustrious career instructing the famous visitors and their families in the art of ice skating, starring in the summer weekly ice shows, building the indoor rink, and developing the ice hockey program. For 35 years Maricich handled the formidable task as Director of all ice skating. Maricich died in his sleep of congenital heart failure on January 4th, 2014, surrounded by his family. He is survived by five children and two grandchildren. Services were held on January 18th at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Ketchum, Idaho. The family asks that donations be made in Maricich's name to the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club at P.O. Box 351, Sun Valley, Idaho 83353.
