Dr. Kenneth James Hanson Obituary
Dr. Kenneth James Hanson
Nov. 8, 1927 - July 3, 2014
Resident of Antioch
Dr. Kenneth J. Hanson passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on July 3, 2014 due to complications from a stroke. He was born in Chicago on November 8, 1927 to Chester and Signa Hanson and grew up in Winner, South Dakota. As a young man he was a flyer over the vast farm fields as a crop duster. After the death of his best friend he gave up flying and became a US Postman. Soon afterwards he married Winona Fern DuBray and began a family.
He served as a Captain in the National Guard during the Korean War and was stationed within the ski patrol units in Alaska and Colorado. Afterwards, he received a doctorate degree in optometry from the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis. He then moved his family to California in 1960 and began his private practice in Antioch. In addition to his practice, he held clinics at the Urban Indian Heath Center in San Francisco and the Martinez and Pittsburg Health Centers.
Being involved with charity and the church, he assisted in the building of the Immanuel Baptist Church. He held numerous church positions as a deacon and was an active member of Gideons International. He was an avid supporter of the Stockton Rescue Mission and participated as a Big Brother for inmates at San Quentin. His generosity and compassion for others knew no bounds and he went to great lengths to help others in need.
His love for nature and the outdoors brought him often to his home in Redding. The term "gentleman farmer" fit him perfectly. His passions for alpine and cross country skiing, deep sea fishing, hunting, roller skating in Golden Gate Park and rare stamp collecting provided wonderful opportunities to enjoy in his spare time.
He lived with grace and dignity throughout his full life with such a cheerful wit and optimism that drew others to him. He is survived by his sons and their partners David and Diane Hanson, Les and Gary Hanson Hirsch as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren. His daughter Yvonne Leslie preceded him. Special gratitude goes out to the wonderful and supportive staff of Diamond Ridge and the Pittsburg Clinic and Sutter Hospice. A memorial will be held at Higgins Chapel on Thursday, July 10th at 1pm with a graveside at Oak View immediately following. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the veterans group of your choice.
