MARIO LOUIS CASAZZA Obituary
Mario Louis Casazza Oct. 10, 1922 - Feb. 2, 2013 Resident of Crockett Mario Louis Casazza died peacefully on February 2, 2013. He was born in Oakland, California, to Secondo and Luigia Casazza, on October 10, 1922. He and his mother moved to Crockett, California in 1933, where he attended Carquinez Grammar School and graduated from John Swett Union High School in 1940. He excelled in basketball and baseball and was an All American basketball player in senior year. He completed his apprenticeship in machinery at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp during WWII, and worked as an airplane mechanic while in the service in England. After the war, he continued to work at Mare Island until his retirement in 1977. He married his high school sweetheart, Gwendolyn Lewis, on August 26, 1945. They were happily married for 62 years until her death in 2006. They resided in Crockett until 2007, when Mario moved to Chancellor Place in Lodi, California, to be closer to his daughter. He also resided at Creekside Care Center in Stockton, California, at his time of death. He was preceded in death by his parents, Secondo Casazza and Luigia Orecchia, his stepfather Giovanni Orecchia, and his wife Gwendolyn Casazza. He is survived by his daughter, Christine Whiting (Michael) of Lodi, CA, son, John Casazza (Lola) of San Francisco, CA, grandchildren, Nicole Yochum (Brian) of Murfreesboro, TN, John Whiting of Lodi, CA, Nahum Casazza of San Francisco, CA, and Gwendolyn Casazza Merkle (Florian) of Cambridge, MA. He is also survived by two great-grandchildren and one arriving in April. Also surviving him are his step-brother Frank Orecchia and nephew, Gerald Orecchia of Napa, CA, a niece, Lois Hart of Martinez, CA , and many friends including his special friend, Penny Sturman of Lodi, CA. He was involved in many organizations throughout his adult life including the Virtus Club of Crockett, BPOE 1900 of Vallejo, CA, the Boy Scouts of America, in Crockett, the John Swett Band Association of Crockett, and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church of Crockett. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, in Crockett, CA, at 11:00 A.M., on Saturday, February 16, 2013. Committal will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 555 Third Ave., Crockett, CA 94525, or to the donor's choice. Funeral arrangements were made by Wilson-Kratzer Mortuaries of Crockett, CA.
