Michael Angelo Lamendola
July 4, 1927 - June 12, 2014
Resident of Antioch
Born in Beloit, Wisconsin to Antonio & Jennie (Cumbo) Lamendola. They moved to Pittsburg, Ca. when he was 6 mo. old staying with Aunt & Uncle Concetta & Alfonso Alaimo until his mother opened a grocery store on the corner of 9th and West St, later moving the store to the corner of 11th and West St. He married at a young age to Dorothy Parker and they became parents of 4 children. They were recognized in the Oakland Tribune as being the youngest couple in the State of Calif. to have 4 children at 20 yrs. old in 1948. He passed away comforted by Hospice with his loving wife, daughter and sister at his side after battling brain cancer.
Attended Pittsburg Schools and was a member of the class of 1946. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy and returned home to raise his family. Employed for U.S. Postal Service, then took over his father's gas station on the corner of Central & Solari St. until it's closure. He completed his working career as a truck driver in the construction industry working with Evola Construction and retired from Eugene Alves Construction in 1989. He was a member of the Retired Teamsters #315, Elks Pittsburg Lodge #1474, YMI SADOC Council #59, Sons of Italy C. Colombo #1315, and ARNAMA & American Legion
He traveled around the world visiting nearly every country. He visited China twice to see the Three Rivers Gorge Dam built and returned to see it's completion. He enjoyed traveling with Eddie Beaudin's 49'ers group, was a faithful fan to the Yankee's, Notre Dame, 49'er, and Green Bay Packers. He loved to fish, play Bocce Ball, and grow a garden filled with fava beans, tomatoes, garlic & zucchini. He enjoyed telling ancestry history with family and especially teaching them Italian cooking and the art of making "Ravioli's".
He was predeceased by his parents and granddaughter Carrie Lamendola. Survived by sisters Frances Mays (Cecil), Geraldine Caldarelli (Lou), Jackie Romero & Florence Imialek (Steve). He is survived by his wife of 70 yrs., Dorothy, celebrating this occasion on May 8, 2014. His children, Michael (Linda), John (Sharon), Carole Kerr (Steve) & Jeannine Ford (Larry). Grandfather of Justina & Gilbert Gomez, Cheri & Michael Lamendola, Lorrie & JoniAyn Lamendola, Michele Trotta, Jennifer Smith, John & Mary Kerr, Great Grandfather of 12 and Great Great Grandfather of 3 and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He will be sadly and greatly missed not only by his family but those who knew him though out the years.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thurs. June 19, 2014 at 6 pm. with Vigil at 7 p.m. at St. Ignatius Church of Antioch and funeral liturgy on Friday June 20, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church of Antioch, 3351 Contra Loma Blvd. Committal will follow services at Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations can be made to Hospice of East County or Elks Lodge # 1474 to the "Major Project Program for Crippled Children.
