1920 - 2013 Obituary Condolences
Oliver Deveta "Ollie" Hamlin III Obituary
Oliver (Ollie) Deveta Hamlin III
July 29,1920-Aug 14,2013
Resident of Lafayette
Ollie was born in Oakland California on July 29, 1920. His father was Judge Oliver Deveta Hamlin Jr. and his mother Mignon DeNeuf Hamlin. Ollie had one sister, Mignon Hamlin Rowe. Ollie grew up in Piedmont California and attended Piedmont High. Ollie graduated from Stanford University in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the destroyer, the USS Farragut in the South Pacific. After the war, Ollie received an MBA from Cal.
In 1945, Ollie married Virginia (Ginny) Sayre of Oakland, California. Together, they had three children: Sally Elizabeth Hamlin of Washington, DC, Jennifer Hamlin Navias of Cazenovia, NY and Jonathan Sayre Hamlin of San Francisco, CA. Ollie and Ginny were very happily married for 53 years until Ginny passed away in 2000. Ollie is also preceded in death by his parents, sister and nephew, Jeffrey Porter Rowe.
Ollie's great grandfather, Oliver Deveta Hamlin purchased over 200 acres of land in what is now a major portion of the city of Lafayette, California. Ollie and Ginny built their home on a piece of the property in 1950, where Ollie still lived at the time of his death. Six generations of Hamlin and Rowe families have lived on and enjoyed the land.
Ollie worked as a commercial realtor, but had a large variety of interests and causes. Ollie loved life, his family, California land and Lake Tahoe. Ollie approached life with the utmost sincerity, always putting others before him. Ollie touched many lives in the business, sporting and personal aspects of his life. He loved hunting, tennis and all animals. In high school he lettered in four sports and in his younger years, he was an avid horseman, spending many hours riding on the Lafayette land. Ollie was a member of the Bohemian Club of San Francisco, Orinda Country Club, Society of California Pioneers and a dedicated volunteer at the Lafayette Historical Society, where without fail he provided refreshments for every meeting. Ollie attended St. Perpetua Church in Lafayette for over 50 years.
In addition to three children, Ollie is survived by his grandchildren, Betsy Luft of NY, Tobias Vargrim of NM, Jesse Hamlin-Navias of NY, Naomi Hamlin-Navias of NY, and Isaac Navias of NY; son-in-law, Geoffrey Navias of NY; his nephews, Dr. Peter Hamlin Rowe (Sandy Miller Rowe) of Lafayette, Steve Scott (Nancy) Scandia, MN, Scotty Scott of Virginia Beach, VA and Richard Jackson (Debbie) of Alameda California. Ollie is also survived by his nieces Judith Rowe Tulloch of Lafayette, Lindsey Jackson Nicholson (Nick) of Portland Oregon, 25 grand and great grand nieces and nephews and his beloved friend and caregiver, Feao Sulina
Ollie was truly a kind individual who strived to generate consensus in order that "everyone get along". He is loved dearly and will be missed with all of our hearts.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 20 at 1PM at St. Perpetua Catholic Church in Lafayette. A Reception will follow immediately at Orinda Country Club, Orinda. The family asks that any donations be made to John Muir Hospital or Lafayette Historical Society.
