Paul Charles Chappelle, 94, passed on March 5, 2014. He was born on Jan. 15, 1920 in Petersburg, Indiana. He is preceded in death by his siblings, Betty and Tom. At 5 years of age he had his first job—delivering newspapers. At the age of 10 he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. High school began in 7th grade where he worked odd jobs and continued his love of swimming and basketball. His college education at
was interrupted when he was called up for active duty on December 1941, six days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor.
He met his beloved wife Marian Carlberg of Oakland while stationed at Alameda Naval Air Station. They married and spent 50 years together before she preceded him in death. After serving in the South Pacific during
World War II
from 1942-1945, he returned to Indiana University finishing his bachelor degree, receiving his masters degree, becoming a doctoral student, and ultimately teaching at the university.
He moved back to the Bay Area teaching and coaching at Castlemont High School in Oakland from 1951-1959. He later took another teaching and coaching position from 1959-1970 at Merritt Junior College in Oakland. From 1966-1968 he also was president of the California Coaches Association. In 1970 he joined Laney Community College in Oakland as a physical education teacher and coach. He served as Athletic Director and Chairman of the Department. He retired in 1981 but continued to teach part-time for many more years.
Paul also married Marita Davila and they are married for nearly ten years before she preceded him in death.
Paul is survived by his three children and their spouses: Suzanne and Jeff Hall of Castro Valley; Steven and Rita Chappelle of Oakland; and Pamela and Fred Eala of Livermore.
He is also survived by his seven grandchildren: Jason Eala (and Tabitha Teixeria) of Stockton; Matthew Eala (and Karyn Mitchell) of Danville; Kristen Chappelle of Campbell; Scott Chappelle (and Caitrin Chappelle) of Oakland; Robert Chappelle of Oakland; Lisa Hall (and James Winters) of Tracy; and David Hall and (Jennifer Hall) of Brentwood. He is also survived by his five great-grandchildren: Brandon, Sage, Jada, Cody, and Taylor.
He will always be remembered as a great coach and teacher and a man who loved his family.
The family expresses their deep appreciation and love for the compassionate caregivers who lovingly assisted him in the last year and a half of his life and to his devoted students for caring so deeply and for being there for him.
