Richard Carl Cupp Obituary
Richard Carl Cupp
Sept. 12, 1924 - July 3, 2014
Resident of Lafayette
Independence Day came early for our Dad as his wish to join his beloved wife of 67 years was fulfilled.  This is bittersweet as we grieve our loss and celebrate their reunion.
Richard was born to Elmer and Edith Cupp in Joplin, MO. He spent his early years in Joplin, then Vancouver where he graduated from high school. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed at the Alameda Naval Base where he met Julie Kohles at a USO dance. Dad said he noticed her from across the room due to her beautiful smile. Their romance continued long distance while he was stationed at Pearl Harbor. After the war, they married and moved to Pullman, WA, where he was attending WSU majoring in Accounting. They relocated to Pleasant Hill in 1956, where he would work for Standard Oil/Chevron for the next 28 years.
With a promotion to join the Senior Audit staff in San Francisco, they moved into their dream home in Moraga where they resided for 42 years. In 2009 they moved to Atria where they were doted on by a staff of wonderful caregivers.
Richard and Julie had nine children and family was what mattered most; being able to care and provide for them. He will be remembered for his terrific quick wit, generosity, and gentle nature. He was no nonsense, practical guy who grew up with little. He instilled values of integrity and honesty to all of his family. He enjoyed baseball and was a Little League coach, League bowler, and sharp bridge player. Anything having to do with numbers was his forte.
He will be greatly missed by his 8 children, Catherine Cassady, Margaret Pfalzer (Thomas), Mary Becker (Bruce), Theresa Taylor (Henry Simmons), Michael Cupp, Joan McClure (Bryan), Carol Cupp (Brian Favero), and Susan Schaefer (Carl), 16 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Robert Cupp (Kathleen), brothers in law Fran (Honey) Kohles and Greg (Cynthia) Kohles and Richard (Jean) Kohles along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife Julie Kohles Cupp and daughter Nancy Cupp.
Funeral will be held July 12th at Christ the King Church at 9:30.
