Richard Lane Nielsen passed away on May 20, 2013, surrounded by his daughters and loving wife of 55 years. Many lives have been touched by his generous and gentle spirit.
Richard was born in Froid, MT; in his early years his family moved to Berkeley, CA. He attended Berkeley High School and served in the U.S. Army with the 106th Heavy Ordnance Company from 1953 to 1955 as a track vehicle mechanic in Busan, South Korea. He earned the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, and Good Conduct Medal during his service overseas. After being honorably discharged from the Army, Richard returned to Berkeley where he met and married the love of his life Gerry Jo Dutton in 1958. He joined the Kensington Police Department in 1960. Richard achieved the rank of Sergeant during his 25 year career and retired in 1985.
Richard is survived by his devoted wife, Gerry; daughters, Kelly Nielsen of Hayward and Catherine Nielsen of San Francisco; brothers, Larry Nielsen and Paul Nielsen, both of WA, and his grandson, Austin Lane Lafayette of Hayward. Richard will be greatly missed by his family and friends and all those who knew him. He will forever be in our hearts.
Friends and family are invited to a Graveside Service Tues. May 28, 2013 at 2:00PM at Oakmont Memorial Park and Mortuary.
