Ruth Hilde Brandt King lost her 28-month battle with stomach cancer Saturday morning at age 71. Married to Paul King for 41 wonderful active years, the couple had no children. Ruth leaves behind 2 brothers and a nephew in Cologne, Germany: Rolf Brandt, Heinz Brandt and Achim Brandt in addition to the extended King family clan. Ruth was born in Cologne, Germany during WW2 to Wilhelm and Theresa Anna Maria Brandt. She was the youngest of four children. She traveled to America and for 2 years worked for Peter Dohman, a well-known stained glass artist in St Paul, MN. Seeking warmer weather and to escape the frigid Minnesota winters, she relocated to Hawaii with her girl friend Helga, and enjoyed the island life for 8 years before moving to San Francisco. In 1971, she met Paul on a blind date through friend Tom Pearce and the San Francisco Singles Only Ski Club. They married November 11 of the following year. Ruth pursued a life-long insurance career, retiring in 2006 as a wholesale broker. She was active in the Northern California Kit Car Club, the Snowchasers Ski Club, Northern California Women's Insurance Association, Paul's music groups, and was a friend of Bill W's for over 7 years. She was named a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International, enjoyed painting, music, traveling, skiing, biking, RVing, knitting, and social gatherings of any kind. Funeral and memorial services will be held 11:00am on Saturday, June 15, Unity Church, 1871 Geary Rd., Walnut Creek, CA 94597. (925) 937-2191.
