Resident of Richmond
William Benford Sr., born April 13, 1934 to Tom Benford and Hazel Moore in Chappell Hill, Texas but reared by a loving step-father William H. Hall. He was the second oldest of eight children. In 1944, the family migrated to Richmond on South 24th Street.
Bill was a product of the Richmond School District where he attended Washington and Nystrom Elementary Schools, Roosevelt Jr High, and Richmond High School after which he transferred to El Cerrito High where he graduated in 1952. After graduation he joined the Navy where he sailed on the USS Destroyer Radar Picket and began his travel of the world. After military duty he was hired by California Canners and Growers and later to work with Fleming Foods, Safeway Stores, and finally in 2007, he retired for the second time from Berkeley Farms.
Bill was a member of Davis Chapel CME where he faithfully served as Sunday School Superintendent, church Steward, a member of Ministry to Men group, and sang in various choirs.
He died peacefully on Thursday, February 13, 2014 with one of his daughters at his side, as he joined his parents William and Hazel Hall, Tom Benford, sisters Bettye Hall Riley, Patricia Hall Wilcots, brothers Stanley Hall, Lloyd Hall, and Alfred Hall in heaven. He leaves to cherish his memory: His daughter, Jacqueline Benford-Harris, his son, William (Holly) Benford Jr., two step-daughters, Nadine Bent-Russell, and Dawn Bent (Cecil) Cole; two brothers, R.C. (Faye) Benford, and Reverend Charles Hall, a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and special acquaintances.
A Celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, March 4th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter CME Church located at 5324 Cypress Ave., El Cerrito, CA. 94530. Inquiries may be directed to 510-236-7431.
