COSHOCTON: Oliver "Gene" Matchett, 89, of Coshocton, Ohio, passed away at the home of his sister, Maureen Allen, on Friday, May 2, 2014.

Gene was born in Adamsville, Ohio, on May 2, 1925, the son of the late Oliver S. and Iva (McVicker) Matchett. He graduated from Adamsville High School class of 1943. Gene retired from the Larson Tool Manufacturing Co. in Newark, Ohio, after many years of service. Gene was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during World War ll in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. He saw action in Guam, the Marianas Islands, and the battle of Iwo Jima, as a rifleman, and amphibious tractor crewman. He was a member of Coshocton Eagles Lodge #761, VFW #1330, and the Army Navy Club in Coshocton. He loved fishing on Wills Creek, Mushroom and Ginseng hunting, Blue Grass music, The Ohio State University Buckeyes, Cleveland Indians, and was the family Corn Hole champion. He was married on September 24, 1956, to Anna Mae Livingston, who preceded him in death on September 6, 1998.

He is survived by his sister: Maureen (Jack) Allen of Coshocton, Ohio; his special brother-in-law, Jim Ames; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and one very special great-great nephew, Oliver Seward.

Gene was preceded in death by his brothers: Francis W. (Helen) Matchett, Dale D. (Delores) Matchett, David H. (Lola) Matchett, and his sisters: Louise (Alvin) McVicker, Bernice (Joe) Wagner, Opal (Clair) Sarbaugh, Wilma June (Ernest) Conkle, Sr., and Clarice Ames.

A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Given-Dawson Funeral Home, 186 Park Ave., Coshocton, Ohio, on Tuesday, May 6, 2014, at 11:00am with Pastor David Kraft officiating. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery, where the Coshocton Co. Veteran's Council will conduct graveside military rites. The family will receive friends and neighbors at the funeral home on Monday, May 5, 2014, from 2-4, and 6-8pm, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
