Donald J. Bowers, Sr., 79 of Deptford, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.
A hardworking family man with a great sense of humor, Don was always there for anyone who ever needed him. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Don enlisted in the US Army and proudly served during the Korean War and then served in the National Guard for many years, obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Prior to retirement he provided for his family over the years by working as a truck driver. Don served as Councilman for the Borough of Bellmawr. He was the recipient of the Bellmawr/Runnemede Jaycees Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award in 1972. In his spare time Don enjoyed reading, visiting the casinos and of course, spending time with his beloved family.
He is the beloved husband of 55 years to Dolores B. (nee Banner); devoted father of Doreen Heverly (Thomas), Diane Lynch (Edward), Donna Szymborski (John), Donald Bowers, Jr. (Alba) and Denise Flynn (James); dear brother of Angela Smith and the late George Bowers; loving grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of 6.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation 10 AM and Funeral Mass 11 AM Saturday in Holy Angels Parish at St. Patrick RC Church, 64 Cooper St., Woodbury, NJ 08096. Interment and military honors in Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the church at the address above.
