AGE: 88 • Washington Township
On December 15, 2013. Joseph was born in Philadelphia, PA on January 24, 1925, to Florence and John Connor. He is pre-deceased by his parents, and brothers John and James, sisters Mary and Catherine. He is survived by his wife of over 64 years, Ileane (Clark) Connor, son James Connor, daughter-in-law Stephanie, grandson Colin, and several nieces and nephews.
Joseph served in the United States Army as a Private First Class during World War II, assigned to the 12th Tank Destroyer Group. He was awarded the Army good conduct medal, honorable service lapel button, World War II victory medal, American Campaign medal, and the European, African, Middle Eastern campaign medal with four bronze stars.
Joe was employed by A&P supermarkets for 35 years and had also worked for Sears, Roebuck and Company. Joe was truly a "people person", with the ability to engage anyone in conversation. In fact one person succinctly observed, "If you ask Joe Connor what time it is, he'll tell you how the watch works!"
In 1965, Joe and Ileane moved to Washington Township where he became a member of the recently formed Whitman Square Volunteer Fire Company. He rose through the ranks serving 30 years, attaining the position of Assistant Chief. During its formative years, Joe served as an elected member of the Washington Township Board of Fire Commissioners. He is a Life Member of the fire company, and among other awards, received the Distinguished Service Medal and Board of Fire Commissioners Service Proclamation.
Until recently, Joe would be seen with Ileane at his grandson's hockey games, or at his son's late-night men's league games, always wearing his #39 "HEAT" hockey jersey.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing Saturday, December 21, 2013, 9:00 - 10:30 am, at the Egizi Funeral Home 119 Ganttown Road, Turnersville NJ. Funeral service 10:30 am. Interment will be at the Gloucester County Veteran's Cemetery, Williamstown, NJ.
