Peter J. Burke Jr., age 69, of Brigantine, NJ passed away suddenly on Friday April 18, 2014 at the AlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Pomona, NJ. Born in Philadelphia he was the son of the late Peter J. Sr. and Madeline Baney Burke. Peter graduated from West Catholic High School in 1963. He went on to receive his BS in Accounting from Philadelphia University and holds an MA in Liberal Studies from Villanova University. He was a Certified Public Accountant in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Peter co-founded Brandywine Senior Living, Inc. of Medford, NJ. in 1996 and served as its Treasurer and Vice President of Development and Reimbursement Policy, where he was responsible for Financing, Development, Acquisitions and Procurement of Venture Capital. His current position for the company was Executive Director of Brandell Estates Assisted Living in Linwood, NJ. Prior to his work at Brandywine, Peter served as the President of Meadowview Group and Chief Financial Officer of National Property Analysts, a large real estate management company. He began his career at Price Waterhouse, where he spent eight years in the audit and tax departments. He was most proud of his work with U.S. Senator Bill Bradley. Peter was a Senior Advisor for Senator Bradley's 2000 Presidential Campaign and Campaign Treasurer for all three of Senator Bradley's U.S. Senate elections. For the past 15 years, he enjoyed his involvement with the LEAP Academy University Charter School located in Camden, NJ, where he served as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees. He also served as Acting Chairman of the New Jersey Health Care Association since 2000. From 1990 to 1996, Peter served as Vice Chairman of the Delaware River Port Authority. He was a former Commissioner on the NJ Pinelands Commission and past president of the Forest Hills Civic Association. Peter loved the beach, running, traveling, playing basketball, telling stories and rooting for Philadelphia-area professional & college sports teams. He was a full time resident of Brigantine New Jersey where 50 years ago this year, he was credited for saving over a dozen people from the Atlantic Ocean, an act to which he received a citation from the local government. As a teenager, he was a lifeguard on the Brigantine City Beach Patrol. Peter was a member of St. Thomas Church in Brigantine; he served his country proudly in the US Army during the Vietnam War.
Peter is survived by his companion Alice Byrne, five children Peter J. Burke lll (Shannon), Heather Matuszewski ( Brian ), Megan Matro (Guy), Colleen Allison (Chris) and Erin Hovey ( Doug) and his former wife, Eileen Burke. Also survived by siblings Isabelle Saia, Madeline Halloran and Philip Burke and his 15 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers who loved him.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday April 22, 2014 at 11:30 AM from St Thomas the Apostle Church 311 S. 8th St. Brigantine, NJ where the family will be receiving guests from 9 to 11 AM. Interment Pvt.
