Richard D. Tomlinson, Sr.

AGE: 68 • formerly of Marlton

Richard D. Tomlinson, Sr. formerly of Marlton, NJ, passed away peacefully at Virtua Memorial Hospital, Mt. Holly on July 25, 2012 at the age of 68. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (nee Soards) for 42 years and devoted father of Richard Jr. and wife Michele of Maple Shade, NJ; Lisa of Mt. Laurel, NJ and Craig (April) of Philadelphia and very proud grandfather (Poppy) of 3 beautiful granddaughters; Lindsey, Hailey and Carissa.

Richard was born at Cooper Hospital and grew up in Cherry Hill Twp. (Delaware Twp). He married Barbara in 1969 and they moved to Marlton a couple years later to raise their two sons and daughter. Richard graduated from Cherry Hill West High School in 1963 and quickly began a long career in serving the public by enlisting in the Army National Guard for six years, from 1963 - 1969 and also volunteering as a Fireman with the Erlton Fire Company in Cherry Hill alongside his late father, Enoch S, late grandfather, Samuel, and late brother, Enoch J. He was hired as a Cherry Hill Police Dispatcher in 1965 and a year later he was appointed to the position of a Probationary Cherry Hill Patrolman. He graduated from the NJ State Police Academy December 1966 and was permanently appointed as a Patrolman. He quickly rose through the ranks serving 33 years with the Cherry Hill Police Department before retiring as a Captain on October 1, 1999. He really enjoyed his retirement and spending time with his family, especially with his granddaughters, and his friends. He also enjoyed golfing and he was a die hard Philly Sports fan always watching Phillies and Eagles games.

Viewing Monday morning 9:30am to 12 noon in the Schetter Funeral Home, 304 West Rt. 70, Cherry Hill, NJ. Interment will follow in Locustwood Memorial Park, Cherry Hill, NJ.
