A. Russell Wood, former banker, school board member and community leader, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at St. Mary's Hospital.
Russell was born on June 28, 1925 on the family farm near Boxville, Kentucky, to Alvah I. and Jessie (Russell) Wood. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in agriculture in 1951. He proudly served as a Sgt. Major in the United States Army during World War II.
After a brief career as a Farm Reporter for WJPS radio station, Russell joined Citizens National Bank, which later became Fifth Third Bank, in 1956 in the newly created position of Farm Services Director. He was promoted to Vice President of the bank in charge of Personnel and later became a Trust Officer.
In 1970, Mayor Frank McDonald, Sr. appointed Russell to the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation Board where he served as Vice-President. Throughout his career, Russell served as an adjunct professor at the University of Evansville, and on the Chamber of Commerce agriculture development committee, the "Keep Evansville Beautiful" campaign, the Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers, the Indiana Bankers Association agricultural committee, as a Director of the Walgrove Corporation, and he held numerous positions in the Vanderburgh County 4-H Club.
The longtime McCutchanville resident was active in the community as a member of First Christian Church for 60 years where he served as an Elder and Board member, was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of Reed Lodge No. 316, and was a appointed by Governor Wendell H. Ford as a Kentucky Colonel in 1974. For the past 40 years, Russell served on the Board of Directors of the Evansville Protestant Home, and was currently President Emeritus after serving as President since 1992.
Russell is survived by a daughter, the Rev. Julie A. Wood of Austin, Texas; a sister, Dorothy (John) King of Evansville; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Lindy Wood in 1990, his parents, and two sisters, Mildred (W.T.) Watson of Dixon, Kentucky, and Camille (Willis) Simpson of Evansville.
Visitation will be on Friday, April 25 at Alexander Funeral Home North Chapel from 3—7 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 26 at First Christian Church, 2845 Beaumont Drive, at 1:00 p.m., the Rev. Mitch Stichler presiding, with burial to follow in the McCutchanville Community Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Russell may be made to the Evansville Protestant Home.
