Charles, age 98 passed away 1:57 p.m. at Embracing Hospice in Cumming, Georgia. Formerly of Fairfield, IL. Born October 4, 1915 to Herschel and Anna Holt- French. Mr. French was a graduate of the University of Illinois where he earned a degree in business and finance. He would later attend law school at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. Many of his early years were spent in Mill Shoals, IL. During his life, with family members, Mr. French was a farmer and grain elevator dealer with locations in Mill Shoals, Golden Gate, Springerton and Enfield, IL. He served on the original Board of Directors and was later President of Wayne County Bank. During WWII He was a captain in the US Army where, in addition of other duties, he served as an aide to Brigadier General W. A. Danielson. One of his most lasting memories was listening to Sir Winston Churchill addres his unit while studying advanced technical training in Business Administration at Harvard University in 1943. In 2012, at the age of 96, he along with several other veterans experienced a long time dream of traveling to Washington D.C. on Honor Air Flight, to see the WWII museum that was completed in 2004. Charles had the designation of being the olest veteran on the flight. The trip was sponsored and paid for by the Roswell, Georgia Rotary Club. Over Mr. French's long life, he served his community in multiple ways including: Memberships- First United Methodist Churches of Mill Shoals and Fairfield, IL. Member of the Republican Party, life time member of the Mill Shoals Ruritan Club and the oldest surviving member. 50 year member of the Mason and Shrine. Chairman of the Wayne County Soil and Conservation District, Elks Club, Rotary Club, American Legion, was reciptant of the Chamber of Commerce Community Service award, President of Mills Prairie High School Board for several years, Member of the joint Illinois/Indiana Wabash Interstate Commission which promoted economic growth. Was a task force member for Senator Evert Dirksen. Survivors include daughters: Anna French Lee & husband Robert- Alpharetta, Georgia, Judy French Harvey- Lexington, KY, Jayne French Dubinsky- Boca Raton, Fla. Grandchildren- Sara Lee Sharp- Atlanta, GA. Chandler Mahal- Dublin, CA, England Dubinsky, Boca Raton, FLA, Lane Harvey- Murfreesboro, TN, Laura Harvey Triplett and John Harvey both of Lexington, KY
Great-Grandchildren- Anna French, Charles and James Sharp all of Atlanta, GA, A.J. and Mohan Mahal- Dublin, CA, Caroline and Scarlett Triplett- Lexington, KY, Cal and Mac Harvey- Lexington, KY, Evan Harvey- Murfreesboro, TN. Sofia Lee- Santiago, Chile
preceding in death: Parents- Herschel and Anna French, wife- Wanda Chandler French, Sisters- Frieda Wheeler and Jeanne Simpson, Brother- Glenn French and 2 Grandsons- Kent and Ryan Lee Visitation will be held 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 9, 2014 at Nale's Funeral Home with Funeral Services at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the First United Methodist Church- Fairfield, IL with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery with full military rites.
