Damon C. Shelton, 90, of Kansas City, MO passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013 surrounded by his family. He was born near Richland, Indiana on April 4, 1922. He was the fourth child of Charles and Opal (Hildebrant) Shelton.
Damon graduated from Rockport High School in Rockport, Indiana in 1940. He continued his education at Purdue University where he majored in Biochemistry and was in the ROTC. WWII interrupted his college years and he served in the US Army Field Artillery from 1943-1946. Upon completion of his military service, he returned to Purdue University where he finished his undergraduate degree in 1947. Damon continued his education at Purdue and graduated in 1950 with a PhD in Biochemistry. During this time he also met and married V. Maxine Hall on December 24, 1943. They enjoyed 66 years of marriage before her death in 2010.
He was a professor at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia from 1952 until 1967. At that time, Damon and Maxine moved to St. Louis, MO where he accepted a position with Ralston Purina Company and was employed there until his retirement in 1987. After retiring Damon and Maxine had a consulting business and were able to travel extensively. He was a member of Phi Lambda Upsilon, The Society of the Sigma Xi, Alpha Phi Omega and several science organizations. Most recently he had been a member of Platte Woods United Methodist Church. He was a wonderful gardener, was excellent at household repairs and loved to share his knowledge and help family and friends.
Damon is survived by two daughters, Karen Schubert and Sandra Donald; 4 grandchildren, Bryan and Megan Schubert; Julie and Lorie Donald, all of Kansas City, MO; a sister, June Reitz of Newburgh, Indiana and several nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held in St. Louis, MO at a later time. Memorial contributions may be made to the Damon C. and V. Maxine Shelton Scholarship Fund at Purdue University.
