Helen Halpern Obituary
Helen Bliss Halpern, M.D.
Evansville, Ind.
Helen Bliss Halpern, M.D.,94, retired pediatrician, and an Evansville resident for the last 20 years, died September 30, 2013 at the Heritage Center in Evansville with her children at her side.
Helen Elizabeth Bliss, daughter of John A. and Floy (Reed) Bliss, was born November 7, 1918 on the Bliss farm in Ringgold County, Iowa. She attended the University of Iowa, where she received her B.A., M.S., and M.D. degrees. Upon graduation from medical school in 1946, she moved to Brooklyn, New York for her internship and residency at Kings County Hospital. There, she met Jacob Halpern, M.D., and they married in 1951. Their four children--David Reed, Philip John, Joseph William, and Susan--were raised in the family's Ditmas Park home in Brooklyn. Helen put aside her professional career during these years, providing her family with her devoted attention, including involving herself in all aspects of her children's upbringing and education, and supporting her husband in his medical practice. Her children have indelible memories of her constant and reassuring presence in their lives; she shared pride in their accomplishments, offered support and comfort in difficult times, and served as a confidante and advisor, even in their adult lives.
When Jacob Halpern died in 1970, Helen returned to the practice of medicine, becoming the pediatrician at the NYSA-ILA (Longshoremen's) Medical Center in downtown Brooklyn, a position she held for some 20 years, until she retired in 1991. She was beloved by her young patients and their parents for her kindness, her good care, and her practical advice.
In 1993, Helen moved to Evansville to be with Earl H. Antes, M.D., an old friend from college days who was a widower. Helen and Earl were devoted to each other, traveled widely, and enjoyed spending time with their broad circle of family and friends. Earl died in 2010.
Helen was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and was a member of Old North Church in Evansville. In her own quiet way, she provided financial support and volunteer services to many charitable causes. In Brooklyn, she served on the board of St. Mark's United Methodist Church, and its Head Start program for preschoolers. Well into her 80s, she continued to deliver Meals on Wheels to the needy in Evansville, even as her own mobility became more difficult.
Helen is survived by her children David, Joseph, and Susan. In addition to her husband Jacob and her companion Earl, Helen was preceded in death by her son Philip, and by her daughter-in-law Lena Gerardi Halpern.
A memorial service will be held at Old North United Methodist Church, 4201 Stringtown Road, Evansville, IN 47711 on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. Interment will occur at a later time in her hometown, Mount Ayr, Iowa.
Helen's family wishes to thank the staff of Heritage Center and Heritage Hospice, and her companion sitters, for their kind and compassionate care during Helen's last year.
Memorial contributions may be made to Old North United Methodist Church or to Meals on Wheels of Evansville, Inc. Her family can be contacted at Joseph Halpern, P. O. Box 8749, Denver, CO 80201-8749.
