John Edward Gibson Sr., 63, of Evansville, Indiana, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2014, at Westpark Rehabilitation Center.
John was born in Henderson, Kentucky, on November 10, 1950, to the late Basel T. and Leila (Hinkle) Gibson. John served in the United States Marine Corp until 1975, and also the Army National Guard where he retired in 1992, after 20 years. At the height of his military career he had the honor of being on President Nixon's Presidential Detail. He was co owner of Bargetown Market and worked at Rosie's Diner and at several trucking companies including, T.C. Instant Express, Tri State Motor Transmit Company and CA Bool Transport. John was a member of AmVets Post # 84, VFW Post # 2953, the American Legion #265, where he served as past Post District Commander. He was also a former member of Lessing Lodge # 464 F. &A.M., Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville, Hadi Shrine, Eagles #4023 and the Owls Nest #30. John could be best remembered as being Santa Claus, passing out candy canes to the kids. He enjoyed spending time at Casino Aztar. His passion was service to the community by helping those in need. John enjoyed long trips to Mexico visiting loved ones.
John is survived by his wife, Asuncion "Susie" (Bravo) Gibson, of Evansville, IN; his children, John Gibson Jr. (Annie), of Wichita Falls, TX, Christopher Gibson (Rachael), of Evansville, IN, Joseph Gibson, of Evansville, IN, Skyler Gibson, of Evansville, IN, Jacqueline Heath (Andrew), of Evansville, IN, and Jocelyn Gibson- Brown (John III), of Evansville, IN; siblings, Alberta Koziel, Mary Lanman, Tom Gibson (Rosie), David Gibson; sister-in-law, Barbara Gibson all of Evansville, IN; grandchildren, Jonathan and Ricardo Gibson, James Heath, Jasmine and Joseph "Joey" Gibson, Carter Brown, Alisha, Leila and Gabriel Gibson and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, James "Jim" Gibson; and grandchildren, Kendyl Brown and Blaire Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2014, at Browning Funeral Home, 738 E. Diamond Avenue, Evansville, IN 47711, with Pastor Stew Armstrong officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery where the Marine Corp League will conduct military rites.
Friends may visit from 2 until 8 p.m. Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Browning Funeral Home.
